Dr. Mulgrew presents on the Totality of Punishment at ICJ Conference, Nottingham

Dr Róisín Mulgrew presented her paper on The Totality of Punishment: A Critical Analysis of the Depth, Reach and Impact of ICC Custodial Sanctions and Measures at the third International Criminal Justice Conference at the University of Nottingham, 13-14 July 2026.

The paper examined the idea of the totality of punishment imposed by international custodial sanctions and measures in both quantitative and qualitative terms. How long do convicted persons spend in detention and how does the form/location/conditions of the liberty deprivation impact upon convicted persons and their post-release lives? The paper explored the temporal, legal and human impact of custodial punishments imposed by the International Criminal Court, and whether the reality of the term, conditions and impact of imprisonment is (or should be) considered in either sentencing or sentence reduction decision-making.

The third edition of this conference was hosted by the International Criminal Justice Unit of the Human Rights Law Centre of the University of Nottingham’s School of Law, bringing together scholars from many countries and disciplines to discuss contemporary issues in relation to the Aggression Tribunal, universal jurisdiction, international criminal procedure and punishment and victim-centred justice.
