The 2025 MA in Environment, Society and Development class completed their ‘Field-Based Learning’ module in Northern Ireland this past week. The students carried out a range of fieldwork activities on two collaborative research projects, under the supervision of Philip Keegan and Programme Director, John Morrissey. The first project focused on the spatial mapping and policy extension of Belfast’s community garden initiatives; while the second focused on the political and governmental challenge of communicating environmental emergency in Northern Ireland. Students met with a range of political, institutional and community actors, and carried out in-depth interviews, community surveys and critical discourse analyses of key policy visions in offering two incisive critiques of core socio-environmental concerns in our contemporary world.
