We were delighted to welcome Her Excellency Ms Larysa Gerasko, Ambassador of Ukraine to Ireland, on Monday 12th October for a day of engagement with students, Ukrainian communities and civic groups in Galway.

Marking the fourth year since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the visit provided an opportunity to reflect on the situation in Ukraine and its implications for the future of European politics.

Dr Brendan Flynn, School of Political Science & Sociology hosted Ambassador Gerasko for a guest address to second-year students taking his European Politics module. Speaking on the topic “On the Situation in Ukraine and the Future of European Politics”, the Ambassador shared insights into the ongoing situation in Ukraine and the wider European political context, offering students an opportunity to engage with a significant contemporary issue in international relations.

Earlier in the day, Ambassador Gerasko met with Ukrainian students in the President’s Drawing Room, including students studying Sociology and Politics. The visit concluded with a showcase of the work of Ukrainian NGOs and Civic Groups in Galway. Through music, animation and song, the groups highlighted their activities within the local community, celebrating Ukrainian culture and the work being undertaken to support and connect people in Galway.
