Overview

The High Dependency in Midwifery micro-credential aims to provide midwives with the specialised clinical knowledge to become effective practitioner’s in caring for clients with complex maternity needs in pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. Building upon existing knowledge and practical skills, this micro-credential seeks to enable practitioners to enhance the development of critical thinking skills to provide evidence-based care for women who require high dependency support. This micro-credential is suitable for beginners in high dependency but an interest or experience in high dependency midwifery is advantageous for this programme.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be over 21 years of age. Applicants must be Registered Midwives working in an Irish primary care setting. Students are required to provide a letter from the Director of Midwifery stating that they will be supported during the module.

What you will Learn

Unit 1: High Dependency Care in context.
Unit 2: Principles of haemodynamic and respiratory monitoring in the midwifery client.
Unit 3: Medical complications of pregnancy 1: Diabetic disorders; Haematological complications; Septic shock.
Unit 4: Medical complications of pregnancy 2: Cardiac disease; Hypertensive disorders; Liver disorders of pregnancy.
Unit 5: Professional Issues in Midwifery Care and real-life case studies.

Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at postgraduate level 9.
