Overview

Learners are introduced to automation and items such as sensors, actuators, motors, pneumatics, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and programming. Automation is used extensively in industry and the module addresses how these systems are used and controlled. For example, quality control, increased throughput and increasing competitive advantage.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be 21 years of age. Applicants should have a Diploma at NFQ Level 7 of 90 ECTS minimum, in a Science, Engineering or Technical area, or otherwise prove that they satisfy the prerequisite of the module. Should an applicant not meet the standard entry criteria Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) will be considered.

What you will Learn

This course will be of interest to students with a background in science (particularly but not exclusively those in the med-tech space) and those in engineering. The flexible nature of the course will appeal to those in employment wishing to upskill.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the core elements of automation technology applied in industry and the main principles behind various automation solutions.
  • Design, program and deploy simple automated systems.
  • Solve problems based on a defined set of requirements for automation in industrial scenarios.
  • Apply analytical methods to size and specify automation solutions in a number of industrial applications.

Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at undergraduate level 8.
