Assurance Eco-System

University of Galway operates in accordance with relevant legislation – the Universities Act 1997 and the Higher Education Authority Act 2022, as well as additional statutory and governance obligations as required of public bodies.  The University has also adopted the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies 2016, subject to the schedule of deviations that have been agreed between the Irish Universities Association and the Higher Education Authority.

Given the range of statutory and governance obligations, University of Galway has developed an Assurance Eco-System to provide itself with reasonable assurance that the University is meeting its assurance obligations. This eco-system is a structured means of identifying and mapping the main sources of assurance in the University.

It utilises that University’s 4 Lines of Defence as it is essential that there is an effective and efficient framework in place to give sufficient, continuous and reliable assurance on the management of the University and the delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan. The Assurance Eco-System will also aid Údarás na hOllscoile in providing itself with reasonable assurance that adequate procedures are in place to secure compliance by the University with its statutory and governance obligations. Údarás na hOllscoile has established an Audit and Risk Committee to support them in their responsibilities for issues of risk, control and governance by reviewing the comprehensiveness of assurances in meeting the University’s assurance needs and reviewing the reliability and integrity of these assurances.
