Gender and Human Rights Lecture Series Opens with Talk by Đermana Kurić
The Centre for Law, Religion and Society (CLRS) and the Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR) were pleased to host Đermana Kurić, Research Associate on the ERC-funded BILQIS Project, for the opening lecture of this year’s Gender and Human Rights Lecture Series.
Kurić delivered a clear and well-structured presentation on “Exploring Intersectionality: Headscarf in the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina.” Drawing on the case of officer Emela Mujanović, she outlined the socio-political and legal circumstances in which the case evolved, alongside the responses of the Ministry of Defence and the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Through the lens of intersectionality, she examined how overlapping systems of exclusion and power shaped the outcome of the case, ultimately preventing Mujanović from advancing in her career and forcing her to leave the armed forces after more than a decade of service. The lecture highlighted the profound personal and structural costs of this unequal treatment.
The event concluded with questions from the audience, reflecting the strong interest in the topic and in the application of intersectionality as an analytical framework.
