Social Worker
Social Work Service – University of Galway
The Social Work Service provides practical, confidential, one‑to‑one support for students at the University of Galway. The service aims to empower students to navigate personal challenges, build resilience, and identify strategies that support their wellbeing and academic success.
You can book an appointment to meet with the Social Worker on this link.
What the Social Work Service Offers
The goal of social work intervention is to help students:
- with a safe, confidential space to discuss feelings, concerns, or challenges
- make positive and meaningful changes in their lives
- build coping skills and resilience
- recognise their strengths and set achievable goals
- explore personal challenges in a safe, non‑judgmental space
- develop solution‑focused plans tailored to their circumstances
- explore specialist support services both within the University and in the wider community
The service is student‑led and voluntary, working in partnership with each student to support positive behaviours, personal growth, and overall wellbeing.
When Students May Seek Support
Students often reach out to the Social Work Service when they are experiencing:
- personal difficulties affecting day‑to‑day life or studies
- complex family or relationship issues
- sudden or unforeseen changes to their personal circumstances
- significant responsibilities outside academic life, such as caring for a loved one
- limited access to typical supports (e.g., family or close friends) and would value a consistent, supportive space
In these situations, the Social Work Service can act as an anchor, offering structured, professional support to help students navigate challenges and explore effective ways forward.
Mikey Brennan | Social Worker
As a social worker I aim to provide a safe and confidential space where you are able to talk openly about your feelings, concerns, or challenges without fear of judgment. I can offer practical guidance during periods of stress, crisis, or significant change, helping you to feel more supported and less alone while working through difficult experiences.
Kelly Monaghan | Social Worker (Currently on Maternity Leave)
I provide a student led, voluntary service and aim to work in collaboration with you to foster positive behaviours and explore areas of personal growth to promote your wellbeing.
