Chief Technology Officer
Technology Services Directorate, University of Galway
With over 18 years of experience in the education sector - 14 of which have been dedicated to leading Core Facilities in Microscopy and Imaging - I have built a strong track record in research support and infrastructure development. My career has been defined by a collaborative approach, working closely with universities, EU consortia, and industry partners to advance scientific discovery.
My professional background is diverse. I began with a degree and MSc in Applied Science, followed by roles in the pharmaceutical and IT sectors, including as a programmer for a multinational telecoms company. This interdisciplinary foundation led me to academia, where I earned a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Galway in 2009. It was during my doctoral research that I developed a deep interest in advanced microscopy, which ultimately inspired the creation and growth of a dedicated light microscopy core facility.
My current role is Chief Technical Officer within the Technology Services Directorate, where I oversee the university’s key enabling technologies - ensuring they effectively support and accelerate research across disciplines.
Beyond my professional life, I’m a passionate climber, mountaineer, and sailor. I’ve climbed extensively around the world and have crossed the Atlantic Ocean by sail on four occasions.
