For enquiries or concerns about individual modules, students are encouraged to approach relevant module leader (the person who teaches this class) at the end of each class. Academic staff may also hold drop-in in-person or virtual consultation hours during the semester and students can discuss any issues during these times or make an appointment.

Why study German with us? We are a vibrant discipline and pride ourselves on our commitment to teaching. We adopt a student-centred approach which is reflected in curriculum design and assessment. Our language modules focus on developing the communicative skills of our students. Studying a language also fosters transferable skills, such as oral and written expression, presentation skills and text analysis.

Our literature and culture modules help students gain a deeper understanding of German literature, history and society. Reflecting staff research interests, they range from 19^th and 20^th century German literature to theatre production and podcasting.

Students spend their third year (one or two semesters) at one of our partner universities in Germany on an Erasmus-funded exchange programme; they may also choose to spend a year as an English-language teaching assistant in a secondary school in Germany. The year abroad enables students to reach a high degree of linguistic fluency and enjoy valuable intercultural experiences.

German at our university has a long and successful tradition of bringing a German play to the stage in March of each year. Final Year students contribute in various ways – as actors, stagehands, lighting & subtitle technicians, prompters, makeup artists, programme editors, costume designers etc.

Career Opportunities Germany is a very important trading partner for almost all European and for many non-European countries. The ability to communicate well in spoken and written German therefore brings many employment opportunities. Our students go on to pursue a wide variety of careers, including in education, media and communications, government services, marketing, and translation and interpreting.
