Course Information
The Master of Accounting is ideal for ambitious, recent graduates of Accounting who wish to fasttrack the professional qualification process and pursue a career in accounting. Candidates must hold or expect to hold full (or near full) CAP 1 exemptions on the basis of their primary degree.
The Master of Accounting is a 1 year fulltime programme. In addition to studying 12 core modules and one of two option modules, students complete EITHER two summer schools OR a research dissertation. The course content addresses key areas of knowledge for the aspiring chartered accountant, including financial reporting, auditing, taxation, finance, management accounting, and data analytics.

Glossary of Terms
- Credits
- You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
- Module
- An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
- Subject
- Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
- Optional
- A module you may choose to study.
- Required
- A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).
- Required Core Subject
- A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.
- Semester

How will I learn?
The Master of Accounting combines innovative teaching methods with practical, hands-on learning to ensure a comprehensive educational experience. You will learn through a mix of interactive lectures and tutorials, guest lectures and small group workshops.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Throughout the programme, your progress is assessed through various coursework and exams.
- Continuous Assessment - Regular coursework, including presentations, reports, case studies, structured debates, and interim exams).
- Examinations - Written exams take place in December (30 ECTS) and in April/May (40 ECTS).
- Summer Schools - Two Industry led summer schools take place in May/June. (20 ECTS)

Entry Requirements and Fees
Minimum Entry Requirements
Candidates must fulfil BOTH of the following:
- Candidates must a H2.1 degree (NFQ Level 8 or equivalent) in Business or Commerce, with a significant specialisation in Accounting. For this criterion, academic entry requirements standardised per country are available here.
- Candidates must also have full (or nearly full) exemptions from the CAP1 examinations of Chartered Accountants Ireland.
English Language Entry Requirements
For applicants whose first language is not English, an English language proficiency of IELTS score of 6.5 is required (with no less than 6.5 in Writing and no less than 6.0 in any other band) or equivalent.

For 25/26 entrants, where the course duration is greater than 1 year, there is an inflationary increase approved of 3.4% per annum for continuing years fees.
Postgraduate students in receipt of a SUSI grant – please note an F4 grant is where SUSI will pay €4,000 towards your tuition (2025/26). You will be liable for the remainder of the total fee. A P1 grant is where SUSI will pay tuition up to a maximum of €6,270. SUSI will not cover the student levy of €140.

Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships
This scholarship is valued at €1,500 for EU students applying for full-time taught master's postgraduate courses. You will be eligible if:
- You have been accepted to a full-time taught master's course at University of Galway,
- You have attained a first class honours (or equivalent) in a Level 8 primary degree.

To be eligible candidates must have achieved a H1 (or international equivalent) in their primary degree and scholarships are offered on a competitive basis. All candidates who meet these criteria and have accepted a place on the programme are automatically considered for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded up to 50% of the programme tuition fees.
