The Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR) at the University of Galway was honoured to welcome Judge Hilary Charlesworth, Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), as the speaker for its 2026 Annual Distinguished Lecture.

The event brought together academics, legal practitioners, policymakers, students, and members of the public for an evening of discussion on contemporary challenges in international law and the continued importance of international institutions in promoting peace, justice, and human rights.

The lecture was opened by Declan Smyth, Legal Adviser at Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs, who reflected on Ireland's longstanding engagement with and commitment to the International Court of Justice. In his opening remarks, he highlighted the important role of the Court in the peaceful settlement of international disputes and underscored Ireland's enduring support for the international rules-based order.

Prior to the lecture, Judge Charlesworth met with Deputy President of the University of Galway, Professor Becky Whay, for a courtesy call in the President's Drawing Room. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the University's international engagement, the work of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, and the enduring importance of international law and multilateral cooperation.

Judge Charlesworth's lecture drew on her extensive experience as one of the world's foremost international jurists, offering insights into contemporary developments in international law and the challenges facing international institutions in an increasingly complex global environment. Her address highlighted the continuing relevance of human rights principles, the rule of law, and international cooperation in responding to global challenges.

Welcoming attendees, Professor Siobhán Mullally, Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, noted the significance of hosting a sitting judge of the International Court of Justice and the opportunity the event provided for engagement with one of the leading figures in international law.

"The Annual Distinguished Lecture provides an important opportunity to engage with leading international thinkers and practitioners whose work shapes global discussions on law, justice and human rights. We were delighted to welcome Judge Charlesworth to Galway and to facilitate discussion on issues of critical importance to the international community."

The Annual Distinguished Lecture is a flagship event in the Irish Centre for Human Rights calendar and reflects the Centre's international reputation for excellence in human rights teaching, research, and policy engagement.
