The Irish Centre for Human Rights at University of Galway welcomes new PhD student Zhou Shiyun, a recipient of the China Fellowship.
Zhou will work on PhD project: From Non-consensual Creation to Persecution: A Feminist Critique of Deepfake Pornography as Gender-based Violence under International Human Rights Law, under the supervision of Professor Ekaterina Yahyaoui.
About Zhou:  I hold a Master’s degree in International Law from the University of Macau and a bachelor’s degree from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. My research interests include human rights, gender, women, international law, artificial intelligence governance and technology and law. Throughout my academic journey, I have maintained a strong interest in human rights protection, particularly in the context of technological development. My undergraduate research explored children's autonomy in the digital age, while my master's research examined the human rights of religious women. My doctoral research focuses on the human rights implications of deepfake pornography. My academic work is guided by the conviction that respect for human rights must remain a fundamental principle, regardless of how technology evolves.
