Postgraduate Researchers

Ciarán Campbell was born in Ireland and currently lives in Galway. He is a Research Ireland's Postgraduate Fellow pursuing his structured PhD in Applied Mathematics with a BSc in Mathematical Science at the University of Galway. Ciarán started working in Tripathi lab as an undergraduate researcher which motivated him to start his doctoral studies on developing machine learning tools for concussion. Ciarán has always been motivated about finding mathematical solutions to physical problems and achieved a top 3 position in the Irish Junior Mathematics Competition (2015). His research interests lie in using machine learning and numerical techniques to optimise solutions to complex non-linear problems. Ciarán is very keen on advancing the state of the art in the medical industry as he is passionate about improving the quality of treatment that patients receive. He has worked at maintaining lab equipment at a pharmaceutical testing company during previous summer breaks from his university studies as a way of gaining experience in various lab techniques.

Yash Bhandakkar holds an MSc in mathematics from IIT Jodhpur and a BSc from Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University. His research interests lie in scientific machine learning with the focus on healthcare applications, as demonstrated in his master's thesis on blood flow simulation in a stenosed artery using Physics informed neural network. As part of the CÚRAM's MedDevDoc program, jointly funded by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), he will be conducting his PhD research on nonlinear shear wave characterisation of clots using machine learning methodologies.

Anna Donnelly is a Galway native and has grown up on campus at the University of Galway. While studying her BSc. Mathematical Science in the university, Anna completed a summer internship in the Tripathi Lab, researching the effects of concussion on balance using applied mathematics. After completing her final year project titled “Detecting Parkinson’s Disease from EEG Signals Using a Convolutional-Recurrent Neural Network” under the supervision of Dr. Tripathi, Anna joined the Tripathi Lab full-time as a Government of Ireland Post-graduate Fellow to continue her research. She is passionate about finding quantitive methods for the diagnosis of concussion, and to improve patient care for those suffering from mTBIs.

Former lab members

Nirupama Sharma joined the lab bringing a decade of industry experience in HR and Management, took on the role of Engagement Lead and led stakeholder engagement and communication for the DigiBrain research. She also led the components related to Reseach Ethics, Data managment etc. She brought real enthusiasm to learning a new field, supporting the project’s video analysis research and contributing an outsider’s eye to a very different kind of work than she’d done before. Her contribution to the lab went beyond her job title. She is now continuing her career in Galway.

Vikrant Pratap completed his Structured PhD in Applied Mathematics (2021-2025) in Tripathi lab at the University of Galway, Ireland, where he developed novel physics-informed machine learning frameworks for nonlinear continuum mechanics and nonlinear shear-wave propagation. During his doctoral studies, he contributed to the Science Foundation Ireland-funded DigiBrain project, which was selected among the top 15 teams in the National Challenge Fund to advance computational approaches for brain mechanics.
He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Technology of Compiègne, Sorbonne University Alliance, France, working on the ANRF-funded NumOptes project. His research lies at the intersection of Scientific Machine Learning and numerical methods, with a focus on developing physics-informed computational approaches for thermal energy systems.
Vikrant received his B.Tech. (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering and M.Tech. in Instrumentation and Signal Processing from IIT Kharagpur, India, in 2018. Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked as a researcher in the Research & Development Division of Tata Steel India. He has authored six peer-reviewed publications and is an inventor on twelve patents, spanning academic research and industrial innovation.

Oisín Morrison received a M.Sc. in Computational Science and Engineering from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2023, receiving an EPFL Master Fellowship of the School of Basic Sciences. He earned his B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics with Theoretical Physics from the University of Galway in 2021. Oisin did his undergraduate project in Tripathi lab studying the viscoelastic properties of the brain matter. During his studies, he was awarded the Hamilton Prize in Mathematics from the Royal Irish Academy, also winning the Sir Joseph Larmor Prize, STERIS Prize in Physics, Michael A. Hayes Prize in Continuum Mechanics and the Peel Prize in Geometry from the University of Galway. Oisín’s research interests lie in applying computational methods to solve complex physics problems. During his master’s studies, his research has focused on multifidelity reduced order modelling using graph neural networks.
